| Description | Letter from James Graham to sister Agnes Graham, January 10, 1865. James thanks his sister for sending him money. He describes how the rebels had fired upon his picket the night before. According to Graham, two of the cavalry were captured and taken as prisoners. He writes that soldiers from his regiment have been stealing corn from the rebels, who have a barn somewhere near the picket line. A fight resulted from this action, creating a stir among the entire regiment, who prepared for battle but the firing of weapons ceased. Graham describes heavy rain which results in his camp being flooded and the cancellation of drills. He writes that there have been a number of deserters within his regiment, two of whom were shot the previous Saturday. Sixty of 160 recruits in another regiment have deserted. |
