| Description | Letter dated April 9 sent from William Gustin Lowry (Gus) to his mother Rhoda Stone Lowry from a camp near Yorktown. He left a camp near "Fortress" Monroe [Fort Monroe, Va.] a day earlier. Gus reports some skirmishes and that there is a large Union force. General McClellan is present as is General Henzleman [Heintzelman] who has done reconnaissance on Confederate forces. Gus describes Heintzelman. Gus reflects on his reasons for serving. |
