| Description | A letter from James Graham to his sister, Elisabeth Graham. This appears to be the second half of a letter, and, as a result, there is no date or place available. The letter most likely was written in the winter of 1864-1865. In this letter, James Graham mentions that two companies that were at Bermuda Hundred doing Provost duty were building quarters at his camp. He writes that it is too cold to drill. He says that a Samuel McFarland from Greenville is there from Company I [or J], and that McFarland had caught a deserter at Bermuda. Graham has heard rumors that 300, 000 additional soldiers will be drafted. He describes the attitudes toward drafted soldiers--they are not trusted and are guarded very closely. He says that the camp is crowded with eight soldiers living in one shanty. He also notes that his camp is equally divided politically--there are three abolitionists and three democrats. He concludes the letter by asking his sister to send him a Larger Catechism [Presbyterian]. |
