| Description | Letter sent from William Gustin Lowry (Gus) to his mother Rhoda Stone Lowry from White House, Va. May 8, 1862. Gus reports on the health and welfare of many of his acquaintances who are also serving in the Army. He also discusses the slaves who are on the plantation where he is currently making camp. The plantation owners have convinced the slaves that the northern army will do terrible things to them. This plantation belongs to Robert E. Lee and was once owned by George Washington's wife. The Union army is grazing its horses and cattle on wheat fields there. Gus comments on the damage armies do to farms. Gus notes that he has not seen any sign of the Confederates since Yorktown. He reports that Captain Maclay has resigned due to poor health. |
