| Description | Letter sent from Richard White to his mother Katharine White from Beaufort, SC in March 1862. Richard writes that his regiment is preparing for some engagement and will be moving soon. He reports on disputes with men in his regiment, particularly a soldier named Carroll [Capt. James Carroll] and another named John C. O'Neill. Carroll was brought before a board of inquiry. The Provost Marshall has resolved the issue and the "gamblers" in the regiment are now gone. The enlisted men in Richard's regiment surprised him with gifts including a sword and sash which indicated to him that after a year under his command they are satisfied with their treatment. |
