| Description | Letter sent by W. R. Sterling to Judge Thomas White from Washington DC in August 1864. Sterling confirms that Harry, Judge White's son, was recaptured during an attempted escape from Confederate imprisonment. Sterling himself was among the group of five officers Harry escaped with, but unlike Harry he was fortunate enough to reach Union lines. Sterling recounts how, after the group of escapees split up, he and another man hid out in a large bush for several days before escaping to Union lines in Knoxville, Tennessee. The men were assisted by slaves as well as defectors from the Confederate army. Sterling writes that he hopes Harry is released from prison soon. |
