| Description | Portrait of Benjamin Heck Crever, founder of Williamsport Dickinson Seminary, the predecessor of Lycoming College. He was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1817. Crever attended Dickinson College, but lacked the money to continue his coursework through graduation. He was ordained a Methodist minister in 1840, and eventually moved to Milton, Pa. In the spring of 1947, when he heard that the Williamsport Academy preparatory school might be for sale, Rev. Crever made the two-day journey on foot, traveling muddy, treacherous roads, to reach Williamsport. With his assistance, the school reopened in 1848 as Williamsport Dickinson Seminary, which became a four-year institution, Lycoming College, in 1947. So, although Lycoming College originally dates from 1812, when the Williamsport Academy was founded, Rev. Crever is given credit as the founder of the present-day college. |
