DescriptionA bell that hung in one of the towers of Old Main is dedicated as a monument on Homecoming Day, November 1949. The bell, which sits on a concrete pedestal at the entrance to the athletic field, originally had been rung to signify athletic victories and to call students to class. After it became cracked in 1943, it was removed from the tower and placed on the campus in front of Old Main. William S. Hoffman, an administrative consultant, suggested that it be placed on the pedestal. Four alumnae participated in the dedication ceremony as special guests: Mrs. Alice Cheston Hicks, Class of 1884; Mrs. Sallie Guss Whiteley, Class of 1887; Mrs. Estella Rockwell Seads, Class of 1889; and, Mrs. Eva Faus McKelvey, Class of 1897. Copies of these photos appear in the Lycoming Courier, Oct. 19, 1949.
